‘Unthinking’ is the deliberate suspension of logical, rational, and conventional thought processes. While ‘Unlearning’ focuses on discarding outdated beliefs, ‘Unthinking’ aims to temporarily disengage the analytical mind entirely. By embracing the absurd, the impossible, and the non-sensical, you allow your intuition to find “crazy” connections that eventually lead to brilliant, practical innovations.
Embracing the Absurd
Logic is a filter that prevents you from considering “unreasonable” ideas. But most disruptive innovations (like airplanes or the internet) sounded unreasonable at first. To find them, you must first “unthink” what is possible.
Define the Challenge
Briefly state your problem.
Example: “How can we revolutionize the way people learn a new language?”
Suspend Logic (The Absurd phase)
Ask questions that encourage impossible, cartoonish, or fantastical answers.
- “What if language could be downloaded directly into your brain?”
- “What if you could learn a language by eating a special ‘linguistic lasagna’?”
- “What if plants could teach you a language?”
- “What if speaking the wrong grammar caused you to float 1 inch off the ground?”
Capture the Nonsense
List every idea, no matter how ridiculous. Do not filter.
Extract the Rational Kernel
Re-engage your logic. Ask: “What is the core benefit of this absurd idea, and how can we achieve a similar effect in reality?”
- Absurd Idea: Language download chip.
- Core Benefit: Effortless, instantaneous learning.
- Real-world Idea: Highly immersive AI tutors that use spaced-repetition to make vocabulary acquisition feel “instant.”
- Absurd Idea: Linguistic Lasagna.
- Core Benefit: Learning is enjoyable, sensory, and integrated into daily life.
- Real-world Idea: Gamified learning that integrates language lessons into a cooking app or dining experience.
Practice
Problem: “A better way to commute to work.” Absurd Idea: “A giant slingshot that launches you across the city.” What is the core benefit? How can we achieve it safely?
